Canada’s most easterly province, Newfoundland is closer to Europe then any other part of North America. It is believed that Newfoundland was the first area of North America explored by the Europeans. There is strong evidence that supports the Viking arrival to Newfoundland around 1000 BC and in fact, you can even visit the very place where they first arrived! This site was the world’s first cultural discovery location to receive recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Newfoundlanders are said to be some of the funniest and most friendly people in Canada. They are extremely proud of their home province which has some of the most spectacular scenery you will find anywhere in the world. Because it’s an island you might expect delicious seafood and the sea to play an important part in the life of Newfoundland and you would be correct. A favorite tradition on the island is the “Screech In” which is a
ceremony for making those not from the Island honorary Newfoundlanders. All we’ll tell you is that there is Screech (famous Newfoundland rum), and a cod fish involved. If you want to find out more you’ll have to visit the Island yourself! |
